Here is a Feb 2006 review by Bob Anthony Jnr form the Tweed Daily.
As I have said before, it's always refreshing to come across something completely unexpected.
Nik Phillips is a very accomplished singer/songerwriter from Brisbane who has been gigging around south-east Queensland, turning up at places like the State of Origin matches or at Ballymore for Reds home games.
Songs From the 4th Floor is his sixth album and I must confess, I hadn't heard of him prior to this. However, he has quickly grown on me and after listening to the album several times, I can't believe I haven't before now.
Nik has that urban story teller feel to his music but with a bit of an edge.
His vocals have a gritty quality which gives him plenty of strength in his songs, 11 of which he wrote on the album
.
From gentle ballads such as Baby's Got New Clothes, Sweet Thing and Woman, to more gutsy tracks like the big sound of Amber Temples, the more upbeat One More Time or the current single Not in This Life show the variety you will find on the album. But one of the major strengths is the lyrical content of this album.
Nik writes in a style which would rival some of Australia's more acclaimed writers such as Paul Kelly or Kevin Bennett. This isn't your conventional country album, in fact it sits just inside the outer edge of country but what it does share with the genre is the ability to tell a story in a song.
It has a very contemporary sound but has such a broad appeal, it would be at home in anyone's collection who appreciates the value of good songs.
This is a very impressive release which you can relax to or have in your car to keep the road rage at bay.
